Technology and SDG 5 – Gender Equality
Introduction and definition of SDG 5:
Women spend around three times as much time fulfilling unpaid domestic chores and care work as men, and accounted for 70% of the health and social care workforce at the frontline of the pandemic.
Progress is being made in gender equality, with fewer girls being forced into early marriage (down 15%) and more women are in leadership roles. Even still, women hold only 25% of national parliament leadership roles, and 36% in local government.
Mobile phone ownership is empowering many women. However in 66 countries, phone ownership for women was still 8.5% lower than for men in the same territories.
