The 10 AI Startups selected for Microsoft’s Sustainability Accelerator Programme:
Microsoft has made some really big sustainability commitments, not only do they aim to be carbon negative by the end of the decade, and to have removed all the carbon it has ever put into the environment by 2050.
However, as reported in the New York Times last month “Microsoft’s Pursuit of Climate Goals Runs Into Headwinds” as they report a huge jump (21.5%) in CO2e emissions between June 2020 and June 2021 – much of this is apparently attributed to building things like the Xbox, data centres and the power required to run the things they build.
With this in mind, it is particularly interesting to see the AI startups selected for the company’s Sustainability Accelerator Programme.
Quanterra Systems – who create carbon flow measurement systems for ecosystems (perhaps like the XBOX ecosystem?)
Modulous – a company that helps create more sustainable buildings that are better for the inhabitants and planet
Materials Nexus – aiming to speed up discover of alternative, more sustainable materials
Yes Make – helping make use of reclaimed materials in public spaces
Seab Energy – creates micro power plants in containers to turn waste into energy
CO2Analysis – making Scope 3 emissions easier to identify and therefore mitigate
Treeconomy – helping land owners make money from growing trees, and businesses find more ways to offset
Scrapp – which helps consumers cut through some of the fog about what can and can’t be recycled
Reewild – who are helping deliver on the promise of farm-to-fork transparency
Vistalworks – who tackle the online trade of illicit goods, helping protect consumers from fake items, and corporations from revenue leakage through theft or counterfeits.
