Stories like this fill me with optimism and excitement.
Imagine if we could deal with our carbon and plastic problems in one go, and in doing it, create new materials that have significant industrial value.
This is exactly what new research from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf research laboratory in Germany has discovered.
While this news focuses on the possibility of huge (nano) diamond reserves on far away planets, if this could be commercialised at scale it could turn the mountains of plastic waste we generate into significant reserves of valuable resource.
Beyond that, the nano diamonds that come from the process can be used in carbon removal applications as well as advance health treatments.
As for the other by-product – a new type of exotic water – I wonder if the heavily ionised water has applications in battery or semiconductor areas?
Anyway, exciting research.
