Will we all live in cities?

In this week’s news articles there are plenty of SDG13 topics to do with climate, a number of 5G and renewable energy (SDG7) and much more.

For a while – at least several years before 2019 – the talk was all about how more and more people were living in cities, and if that trend continued then by 2050, you’d only find humans in cities, the countryside would be blissfully human free (or covered in city sprawl).

Indeed, this article goes into some depth on the topic and looks at how smart cities will be the answer (note: I had trouble loading the full the page, I hope it works for you).

But, has COVID changed this prediction? This week 80% of the people I spoke with have decided to move from the city to the ‘burbs or even to remote countryside or by the sea.

Aligned with this anecdotal information, I have other references points too. First, I’ve been working on a client project where digital connectivity is pointed to as a technology most likely to help solve our societal issues – a big part of this is access to work and education. Second, there are articles like this one which talks about a city migration survey by Knight Frank.

But it’s not that straightforward. I also saw another article last week (I’ll update this if I find the link!) that talked about how the younger generations are actually migrating to the cities.

So I thought I’d ask you, what are your plans? Let me know in the simple survey below. You don’t need to provide your email address or sign up to anything, but you will need to accept the GDPR terms so I can store your result.

If you do leave your email address, I can let you know the results ? and if you do choose to sign up to my awesome newsletter, I’ll plant a tree on your behalf! ?

If you could choose anywhere to live, regardless of your work commitment, where would you live?
